FIRE PREVENTION & LIFE SAFETY
FIRE PLAN – CODE RED
If there is a fire is in your area: stay calm, don’t shout “fire,” use the following procedure:
R. A. C. E.
R – RESCUE Immediate action may be needed to save a life. Move patients in
immediate danger and close that door.
A – ALERT Alert by pulling down the fire alarm pull station and notify switch board
of exact fire location.
Dial 22 in medical centers or 911 in Ambulatory Clinic or non-hospital
free standing facility
(fire alarm pull stations are located at stairwells, nursing stations, office
areas, and exits).
C – CONFINE Close doors and windows, to prevent smoke spread and to cut off air
supply to fire.
E – EXTINGUISH With fire extinguisher, if trained and safe to do so.
The steps to be used in the R.A.C.E. plan for fire safety may vary in sequential order depending
on the immediate situation. For example, if you discover a fire in an empty room, the first thing
to do would be to confine the fire by closing the door and then sound the alarm. If the fire is
discovered in an occupied room rescue efforts should be implemented immediately.
Elevators should never be used during a Code Red.
